Emergent, an Indian AI coding startup, has just secured $130 million in Series C funding at a $1.5 billion valuation—five times its value just six months ago. The platform lets non-technical users build and deploy software with AI, effectively offering "an engineering team in a box."
How Emergent’s AI coding platform works
Instead of writing code from scratch, Emergent’s tools handle programming, deployment, hosting, testing, and debugging for users. Think of it like a self-driving car for software development: you describe what you need, and the AI builds it. This approach targets entrepreneurs and small businesses that traditionally rely on spreadsheets or messaging apps to run operations.
Emergent’s rapid growth includes:
- Annual run-rate revenue of $120 million, up 70% in four months
- Over 200,000 paying customers, including trucking, construction, and property management firms
- Revenue split: ~33% from North America, 33% from Europe, and 8-9% from India
Standing out in a crowded AI coding market
Emergent competes directly with Replit, which co-founder Mukund Jha calls its closest rival. Unlike developer-focused tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code or OpenAI’s Codex, Emergent prioritizes non-technical users by bundling the entire software development lifecycle into one platform. However, Jha admits design remains a weak spot, as AI-built websites often end up looking similar.
The fresh funding, led by Creaegis with participation from Khosla Ventures, SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2, and others, will fuel product development, research into complex AI applications, and expansion into Europe. Emergent also plans to grow its San Francisco office from a handful of employees to 30-40 by year-end.
