Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration has launched a statewide crackdown on milk adulteration, with IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe leading the enforcement drive since May 25. The agency has uncovered synthetic milk production units and suspended licenses, including that of Mumbai’s K Rustom & Co., for hygiene violations.

Strict food safety norms under new FDA commissioner

As commissioner, Mundhe tightened regulations across the milk supply chain, covering dairies, transporters, and retailers. He stated that adulterating milk endangers public health, particularly for children, patients, and senior citizens. The FDA’s actions have already reduced milk and paneer supply in some areas.

Viral videos show milk being discarded to evade inspections, while high-profile businesses face penalties. K Rustom & Co. was suspended after an inspection revealed low milk fat compliance and poor hygiene standards. Mundhe emphasized that non-compliance with FSSAI norms would not be tolerated.

Expanded enforcement beyond dairy

The FDA has also targeted gutkha, raiding 904 locations across Maharashtra. Mundhe declined to compare his tenure with predecessors, stating he would only discuss his own work. Political figures like Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Nirupam have supported the crackdown but called for a grace period for businesses to adapt.

Citizens are urged to monitor hygiene standards as the FDA continues its food safety crackdown. The agency has not indicated when the enforcement drive will conclude.
