Railway Police have arrested three people, including the wife of the victim, in connection with the murder of a man shot dead aboard the Jansadharan Express in Bihar’s Khagaria district last month. The killing occurred on July 11 near Badlaghat station.

Victim and accused identified in Bihar train murder

Dev Kumar Gunjan, a Grade-I Technician with the Electricity Department in Jamui, was travelling to meet his wife, Smita Kumari, a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) posted in Supaul, when he was shot. He later died from his injuries. The accused include Smita Kumari, her alleged lover Ajit Kumar (also a Grade-I Technician in Nalanda), and contract killer Raju Kumar alias Dhiraj.

Investigation reveals alleged conspiracy

Police allege the murder was planned to remove Dev Kumar as an obstacle to Smita Kumari’s relationship with Ajit Kumar. The couple, along with the victim, had joined the Electricity Department in 2017 and were initially posted in Sitamarhi. Smita and Dev Kumar married in 2018 and have a young daughter.

According to investigators, Smita and Ajit allegedly hired Raju Kumar for Rs 4 lakh to carry out the killing. After the shooting, Smita attempted to mislead authorities by framing the incident as a robbery on the moving train.

Scientific evidence leads to arrests

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), assisted by the Special Task Force (STF), used technical and scientific evidence to uncover the alleged conspiracy. All three accused have been remanded to judicial custody. The case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act, with the investigation ongoing.
