A former US Army Special Forces soldier, Jordan Brown, was detained near the Indo-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh on July 11 for attempting to cross into Nepal through an unauthorised route. The 36-year-old American, reportedly a Green Beret, was intercepted by SSB personnel at Border Pillar No. 516 (22) in Maharajganj district after failing to produce identification documents.
Detention and Flight Attempt
SSB personnel noticed Brown attempting to cross into Nepal around 10 am. When questioned, he allegedly refused to cooperate and fled toward the Indian side, covering nearly 30 metres into agricultural fields before being apprehended with the help of local villagers. He was later handed over to Uttar Pradesh Police.
Brown told investigators he lost his passport in Vietnam, entered India illegally via Bangladesh, and was heading to Nepal to meet an individual identified only as "Naz," whom he claimed to have met in Goa. He provided no further details about the person.
Military Background Raises Security Concerns
Intelligence sources noted Brown’s elite military training, including SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) skills, which heighten scrutiny of his movements. Authorities are probing why he bypassed official channels for emergency travel documents after losing his passport.
Brown also claimed to have married an Indian yoga instructor in Italy two years ago, a detail security agencies are verifying. No espionage or terrorism charges have been filed, but investigations continue into his travel route, contacts, and motives.
