The Los Angeles Knight Riders' new home in Pomona was ready for its Major League Cricket debut on July 1, after a breathtaking 100-day transformation that saw a dormant horse racing venue turned into an international cricket ground.
From Dormant to Thriving: LAKR's Cricket Stadium Makeover
The journey to match readiness was marked by numerous challenges, including the discovery of a live 15,000-volt electrical transponder and buried sewage lines, which forced the team to make significant workarounds. Despite these hurdles, the venue was transformed in record time, with the square being laid as late as March 22.
The statistics from the seven MLC matches hosted at the venue were encouraging, with an average first-innings score of around 160. The pitches, prepared by veteran curator Damian Hough, held up well, and the stadium's infrastructure was put to the test.
- Average first-innings score: 160
- Number of MLC matches hosted: 7
- Time taken to relocate the electrical transponder: 3 days
- Distance the floodlight pole was shifted: 20 feet
Overcoming Obstacles: LAKR's Path to Success
The transformation was not without its challenges. The team had to navigate complex regulations, work with multiple stakeholders, and overcome unexpected obstacles. Mayank Dayal, CEO of LA Knight Riders, played a crucial role in bringing the project together, working closely with Walter Marquez, CEO of Fairplex.
As the LA Knight Riders look to the future, their new home in Pomona is set to play a key role in the growth of cricket in the United States. With the success of the MLC, the team is poised to take the sport to new heights, and the stadium is ready to host more thrilling matches.
