The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has accepted the resignation of its general secretary, Champat Rai, and trustee Anil Mishra, following allegations of embezzlement of temple donations. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Trust president Gopal Das Maharaj at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex guest house.
Background and Allegations
The allegations of financial irregularities and potential misappropriation of donations and offerings at the Ram Temple prompted an internal review and discussions regarding accountability within the Trust's management. The Trust had received ₹3,264 crore through donations and contributions since its inception, with ₹2,370 crore spent on construction and related work.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the allegations, and a preliminary report led to the resignation of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra on moral grounds. The Trust has stated that it is fully cooperating with the investigation and desires that all individuals responsible be brought to justice.
Trust's Response and Reforms
The Trust has appointed Krishna Mohan as acting general secretary and formed a three-member committee to select a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The committee includes Justice (retired) Pramod Kohli, Vishnukant Chaturvedi, and Suresh Havde. A separate committee has been formed to propose additional measures aimed at preventing the recurrence of any wrongdoing.
