A widowed IIT Kanpur employee was hospitalized with serious injuries on Saturday after being attacked with a brick by Devashish Nigam, son of a retired IAS officer, following her rejection of his marriage proposal. The incident occurred near Bithoor when Nigam allegedly assaulted the woman after she refused his proposal.
Details of the Assault
Nigam and the woman had become acquainted through social media and had grown close. On Saturday evening, he picked her up from IIT Kanpur, and they headed towards Bithoor. During the journey, he proposed marriage, intending to divorce his estranged wife. However, the woman declined, citing her 16-year-old daughter as the reason.
According to police, Nigam became enraged and slapped her multiple times inside the car. When she attempted to exit, he locked the doors and searched for something to attack her. Failing to find anything inside, he picked up a nearby brick and smashed the car window before hitting her on the head multiple times.
Arrest and Aftermath
The woman managed to escape and ran towards the road, shouting for help. Locals intervened, overpowered Nigam, and handed him over to the police. The victim was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Assistant Commissioner of Police Dilip Singh confirmed that Nigam was arrested, and a complaint was lodged by the victim's sister.
Nigam, who lives in Swaroop Nagar, is married with a daughter but has been living separately from his wife. His mother, a retired IAS officer, is said to be the owner of two guest houses in Varanasi, which provide him with an income.
The police are continuing their investigation, and the victim remains hospitalized. The case is being pursued based on the complaint filed by the victim's sister, and further legal action is expected.
