The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the chairperson’s post in 10 of Delhi’s 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ward committees on Wednesday, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the remaining two. The BJP also expanded its majority in the civic body’s 18-member Standing Committee, now holding 12 seats to AAP’s six.
MCD Standing Committee and ward election results
The Standing Committee, the MCD’s top financial decision-making body, approves contracts, policies, and projects exceeding Rs 5 crore. Its 18 members include six directly elected by the 250-councillor House and 12 chosen by the ward committees.
Elections for committee chairpersons, deputies, and Standing Committee seats were held at the Civic Centre. The BJP won chairperson posts in Najafgarh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, South, Keshavpuram, Narela, Civil Lines, City SP, Central, and West zones. AAP secured Rohini and Karol Bagh.
Key ward committee outcomes
- Najafgarh: BJP’s Jaivir Singh Rana (chairperson), Sushma Rathee (deputy), and Shashi Yadav (Standing Committee) won unopposed.
- Shahdara South: BJP’s Yashpal Singh defeated AAP 18-6; Raju Sachdeva and Munesh elected unopposed for deputy and Standing Committee.
- Rohini: AAP’s Pushpa won chairperson 12-11; Ramesh Chand (deputy) elected by the same margin.
- West Zone: BJP’s Harish Oberoi defeated AAP 14-11; AAP’s Dimple Ahuja won deputy chairperson 13-12.
Political reactions and next steps
Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged Congress supported the BJP in the South Zone, where BJP’s Dharamvir Singh won 12-10 despite an even split of councillors. Congress councillor Nazia Danish dismissed the claim, noting AAP’s narrow losses in West and City-SP zones.
The results solidify the BJP’s control over the MCD’s financial and administrative decisions, with the Standing Committee now firmly in its grip.
