The Indian Navy is set to commission its sixth indigenous stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri, on July 11 at Visakhapatnam, marking a significant milestone in the country's warship-building capabilities. The frigate is part of the Project 17A programme, a series of advanced stealth frigates designed to modernise the Navy's fleet.

Indigenous Design and Manufacturing

INS Mahendragiri has been designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, with over 75 per cent indigenous content. This reflects the government's push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The warship's construction involved a wide network of Indian industries, including numerous micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Advanced Capabilities and Features

The frigate incorporates advanced stealth features, enhanced survivability, and a high degree of automation, making it capable of undertaking various maritime missions. It is powered by a modern Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system and equipped with an advanced suite of indigenous weapons and sensors, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems.

  • Surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems
  • Electronic warfare capabilities
  • Anti-submarine warfare systems
  • Integrated Combat Management System

The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance India's maritime capabilities and reinforce its role as a preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region. The warship will be capable of undertaking anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations, as well as supporting maritime security and humanitarian assistance missions.

Future Implications

With the induction of INS Mahendragiri, the Indian Navy continues to modernise its fleet and strengthen its maritime combat strength. As the country continues to push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the commissioning of this frigate marks another key milestone in India's efforts to become a major player in the global defence industry.
