Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Madan Mitra resigned from the party on Wednesday, joining the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded by dismissing criticism of Abhishek Banerjee, calling it an excuse for departures.
Mamata Banerjee Defends Abhishek Banerjee
Banerjee stated that those leaving the party by citing Abhishek Banerjee were “merely making excuses.” She emphasized his resilience, noting, “Abhishek is still fighting and continues to stand by the people.”
She recalled past scrutiny of Abhishek Banerjee’s family by central agencies, including the ED and CBI, highlighting their refusal to back down. Banerjee also affirmed her role in nurturing party leadership, saying she had built “three generations” and would continue to do so.
Madan Mitra Criticizes TMC Leadership
Mitra, after joining the rebel faction, alleged the party had become centered around Abhishek Banerjee. He claimed he had suggested Abhishek step aside temporarily to rebuild the party, but the request was refused. Mitra added that the party now seemed to serve only Abhishek Banerjee, despite belonging to all members.
Mitra resigned from all TMC positions but remains an MLA. His departure follows the ED summoning his family over the alleged municipal recruitment scam, which involves corruption in West Bengal municipal appointments. The ED is investigating under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
TMC Faces Growing Internal Dissent
Mitra’s exit marks another setback for TMC amid internal divisions, particularly after its defeat to the BJP in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Speculation suggests nearly 20 MPs are unhappy with the party leadership, with defections signaling a deepening crisis.
